Abstract Title: SAFEGUARDING AMERICA’S AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES: PLANT PROTECTION & QUARANTINE’S ROLE IN DETECTING AND ERADICATING EXOTIC PLANT PESTS. Justin Wall, USDA-APHIS-PPQ, Austin, TX

Abstract Text: Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) is a program within the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). PPQ safeguards agriculture and natural resources from the entry, establishment, and spread of animal and plant pests and noxious weeds into the United States of America; and supports trade and exports of U.S. agricultural products. In Texas, PPQ has 17 locations that perform a wide range of duties including: pest detection, export certification, pest identification, imported propagative material inspection, and sterile fruit fly rearing. Early detection and rapid response become even more difficult as Texas sees increased cargo importations and population growth from other areas in the US infested by quarantine pests. PPQ meets these challenges of increased pest risk by utilizing its relationships with other government agencies and volunteer and stakeholder groups. This cooperation is vital in detecting and eradicating exotic plant pests.
