Group: Walnut Creek Wild Ones
Location: Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park, Austin, 78753
Event Notes: In the grove northeast of the Picnic Shelter, where a fraction of the ligustrums are logged as observations 18635–18666, seven volunteers regirdled 10 or 15 ligustrums that had regrown bark after having been girdled in September 2014. About 10 other ligustrums girdled in 2014 were found to have died. Dozens of young ligustrums, plus a solid mass of foot-tall saplings that had sprouted in the areas made brighter by the death of the canopy-level ligustrums, were uprooted. One chinaberry was girdled, and several more were uprooted. One Chinese pistache was girdled, and several more were uprooted. Puller Bears obtained with an Invaders of Texas grant were used on all uprootings except for those of the foot-tall saplings, which were pulled by hand.
